Canaga (Gnagi) from Norway as far back as I got

I started with just the first 3 generations and now I have my dad's dad's side back to Ezechiel Gnagi born 1515 married to Benedikta unknown last name possibly from Norway
Then in 1742 Johannes Gnagi went to the America's arrived at Pennsylvania. His son Christian Gnaegi (Canaga) arrived in Pennsylvania in 1750. He was a carpenter and they were Amish (Then known as Dunkard, The Church of the Brethern).

Info taken from the Historical Collections of Harrison County in the State of Ohio.
Christian Canaga originally spelled Gnaegi emigrated from Berne province Switzerland, to America before the revolution 1750-70, and afterwards settled in Somerset county, Penn., whence he removed to North Township, Harrison County, Ohio, about 1807, where he died in 1812. This was my great-grandfather just four generations ago.

I have a lot of information on this family recorded on Ancestory. com as well as pictures. I absolutely love finding pictures to put with a name.

  2. Hello, my name is Tom Kanagie and Christian Canaga (born Gnagey) was my 4th GreatGrandfather. There is misinformation about when he came to the colonies (started by the genealogy written by Elias Gnagey, who I sure did not have the information about Johannes since he is not mentioned). He came with his father, Johannes Gnaegi on the ship Francis and Elizabeth on Sept. 21, 1742. My father was our family genealogist, when he was alive, I had no interest in genealogy. He passed away in 1974 and I inherited all his books and paperwork. I got curious about this "stuff" that came into my hands and I was bitten by the genealogy bug. I have since been working on my ancestry. Amazed by the things I came across what I have been finding out over the last 40 plus years. I want to thank you for publishing this, because I think I found out something about Christian. I knew he died in 1812 in Ohio but not realizing what caused him to move there. The book you mentioned "Historical Collections of Harrison County" possibly gave me the answer. His son, Jacob, moved there the year before and that could have been the impetus for his moving. Just a little fact but a bit of information that I had beed desiring. Please get back to me so we can discuss our heritage, thank you, Tom K.

    1. How wonderful for you to stop by my blog. You know I made this post in 2012 and have not updated it as I mostly use Ancestry.com where I do have the information correct. I do believe I just left this from where I found the information in the historical book I came across in searching. I will make my updates.

Here is the lifestory I have posted on my ancestry page for Christian who is also my 4th great grandfather. Then Jacob, Jacob II, Thomas White, Ross Locke, Thomas Lou. I will be sure to update this page soon. Thanks Sylvia

  3. Interesting. I too have gotten back to Ezechiel. Jacob, a brother to Christian is where we part ways. I have an ancestory.com site as well under Robert Kanagy.
